March Madness: 8 biggest winners from 1st round of 2024 NCAA Tournament
2. Keith Dambrot and Duquesne Dukes
Duquesne made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1977 after winning the NCAA Tournament but there was some more history to be made. Coach Dambrot had three other trips to the Big Dance from his days at Akron but was 0-3 there.
In his lone trip with Duquesne, he got the elusive win, beating 6-seed BYU 71-67 in the first round. It’s the program’s first win in the postseason since 1969. Coach Dambrot looks to continue pushing off retirement and to get to the Sweet 16 by beating 3-seed Illinois on Saturday.
1. Jack Gohlke and Greg Kampe - Oakland Grizzlies
Couisnard may have had the most points but the most impressive scoring outing of the first round was senior guard Gohlke, who dropped a season-high 32 points on 10/20 shooting from three-point range. Oakland needed every one of those 3s to pull off the 80-76 upset over Kentucky, the biggest shocker in the first round.
A shoutout also goes to HC Kampe, who has been with the program for 40 years and has four NCAA Tournament appearances as well since the program moved up to D-I. It’s his first win in March Madness as well.
Oakland may not be done dancing yet, as they get 11-seed NC State in the Round of 32. One of these double-digit seeds will be going to the Sweet 16 after Saturday.
