Former Maryland guard Jahmir Young's professional career is officially underway. He made his first appearance in the NBA Summer League last night for the Denver Nuggets, logging two rebounds and two assists over nine minutes of action. He did not attempt a field goal as the Nuggets fell to the Los Angeles Clippers, 88-78. While it wasn't the type of performance Maryland Basketball fans are used to seeing from Young, he'll have a few more opportunities to sell NBA teams on his skillset.

Jahmir Young was extremely productive over his two years in College Park, averaging 18.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists as a Terrapin. In the 2023-24 season, he exploded for 20.4 points and 4.2 assists per game, both career highs, and was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the media. On February 6, Young became the third-fastest Terp to score 1,000 points in a Maryland uniform and the fifth to accomplish the feat in only two seasons. He elevated his play against better competition, finishing as one of the nation's top scorers against Quad 1 opponents with 23.9 points per game in such contests.

In recent weeks, Young received the James H. Kehoe Award from the University of Maryland as a "student-athlete who exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship." He also had his name honored among other Maryland Basketball greats with a plaque in Heise Hallway.

Young had an eventful pre-draft process, working out for more than 10 NBA teams. He was one of the top performers in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, averaging 16.7 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game on 49% shooting and receiving All-Tournament honors to boot. He went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft and signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Denver Nuggets.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, fully non-guaranteed minimum contract that does not count against the salary cap or luxury tax. Essentially a tryout contract, it can be converted to a two-way contract or a standard contract before the start of the NBA season if the team in question likes what they see. The Denver Nuggets currently have just one two-way slot remaning.
