Porter Moser

Making the best hire means that Michigan needs to examine all of their options. Some of the coaches we’re naming today are shots in the dark while others are far more realistic. We don’t exactly know which camp Moser falls into, but we know that he’s a fantastic coach with a ton of experience.

Originally from just outside of Chicago, Moser played college ball at Creighton before beginning his coaching career. After bouncing around as an assistant, he had mixed results in head coaching tenures at Little Rock and Illinois State. His greatest success came at Loyola Chicago, who hired him in 2011 and patiently watched him build a giant, with the Ramblers advancing to the Final Four in 2018 and the Sweet Sixteen three years later. Moser was hired by Oklahoma three seasons ago and has the Sooners on the doorstep of their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Moser was connected to the DePaul job that was open in recent weeks but declined a return to his home state. Would he actually leave Oklahoma to head to Michigan, especially when he has no connection to the state or conference? What we’ve seen is that Moser is a great coach who can win games when it matters most, though he’s made only two (or three) trips to the Big Dance in 20 years as a head coach. Then again, Michigan is a much different job than DePaul.
