5. Get Back to Basics

Don’t ever overcomplicate things. This applies in Life and Basketball. Don’t fix what isn’t broken and Michigan State was never broken they have still been able to win and make the tournament consistently every year. Their aggressive defensive style along with high efficiency from the three-point line has won coach Izzo a ton of games.

Coach Izzo said himself that he was overcomplicating things and needed to get back to basics. Start doing what he knows works and start playing Michigan State style basketball. That includes playing small lineups with athleticism, getting out in transition, playing the star freshman, and starting to get physical. Coach Izzo has an open competition at the big man spot right now and said that everyone including the walk ons are ready for minutes. Hopefully by getting back to what got him where he is will pay off with wins.

I know Coach Izzo blames himself because he is the face of the program but there are a lot of things that have led to the downward spiral that Michigan State is currently on. There is only so much he can do as a coach the players still have to execute and do what they are supposed to do. It would also help if coach Izzo will put players on the floor who want to play and will attempt to do what he wants. Just get back to basics, don't overcomplicate things.

Michigan State is going to get it figured out and they are going to still likely make the tournament. It would do wonders if the Spartans could figure out a way to beat Baylor on Saturday which would give them a huge resume boost heading into the Christmas Break. Michigan State needs a reset and a confidence boost in the worst way. They are still in a good place and can be fixed but it is going to take some buy in and some guys dealing with their new roles to accomplish this feat but it can be done. A coach like Coach Izzo is the perfect guy to lead the turnaround.
