7. Jarrett Culver – Phoenix Suns (2019: Pick 6)

Born and raised in Lubbock, Texas; Culver would stay right in his hometown and contribute on the greatest Texas Tech season in program history. Not only was he a Second Team All-American and the Big 12 Player of the Year as a sophomore, he helped guide the Red Raiders on a phenomenal run all the way to the national championship game. After this breakthrough success, Culver skipped the rest of his college career and was off to the NBA.

There were some phenomenal names at the top of the draft in 2019, and Culver has certainly underwhelmed compared to the rest of the top picks from that season. He was initially selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 6th pick, though his rights were immediately traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. After a solid rookie campaign, averaging 9.2 points per game as a part-time starter for the Timberwolves, Culver’s career went south, barely seeing the court across the next three seasons.

Culver played for two other franchises, getting traded to the Memphis Grizzlies before briefly playing with the Atlanta Hawks. However, he never saw much run in either place and then spent this entire past season in the G-League. He never came close to replicating the success from Texas Tech and is the only Top 10 pick from 2019 who didn’t play in the NBA this season. Names like Coby White and Tyler Herro came a few picks later and certainly have been much more impactful.
