Detroit Mercy finally ended a 27-game losing streak that dated back to last season on Valentine's night, defeating fellow Horizon League opponent IUPUI 81-66 behind the 25 points from the Titan's leading scorer, Jayden Stone.
Following their victory over Purdue Fort Wayne in the Horizon League conference tournament of the previous year, UDM (1-26, 1-15 Horizon League) won their first game of the season. The Titans came close to winning some games this season when they lost on the road to Ole Miss by only one point, lost at home by three to Ball State, and lost in overtime by three on the road to Robert Morris. Together with Mississippi Valley State (0-24), the Titans were one of just two teams without a win going into this game.
Stone along with his 25 points on 10 for 20 shooting from the field also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals in this game. Marcus Tankersley had 19 points including being perfect from the free throw line by making 9-of-9 of his attempts. Michigan State defeated Penn State 80–72 on Valentine's night. Guard Jaden Akins scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half having an outstanding first half of play. However, the star of the night for the Spartans was 5th-year senior Malik Hall who finished with a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds.
After losing four in its first five Big Ten games, Michigan State (16-9, 8-6) has won an impressive seven of its last nine games and they are currently sitting in fifth place in the Big Ten standings.
This win was significant due to the Spartans trying to finish in the top four of the Big Ten standings to earn a double bye in the upcoming conference tournament. Also, this was Michigan State's second road win in Big Ten play.
