NCAA Basketball: 4 teams from the State of Michigan won on Saturday
By Ryan Kay
It has been a rare sight of late that four Division 1 teams from the state of Michigan won on the same day but it happened when four of the five division one basketball teams from the state of Michigan that played on Saturday, won their game.
Western Michigan won their third game in a row as they won back-to-back road games in conference play to go undefeated thus far in the season in Mid-American play. After the Broncos defeated Miami (OH) on the road, they went on the road to play the Buffalo Bulls. The game was close throughout the game but behind Seth Hubbard's 19 points and B. Artis White's six assists and 17 points, Western Michigan defeated Buffalo by 5 to be tied for first place in the MAC standings.
Central Michigan has won three of their last five games and they went on the road and defeated Ball State. The Chippewas after defeating South Florida on the road earlier this season have lost more games than they have won but they have played some tough competition this season and their defeating Ball State could lead to more victories for Central Michigan in conference play. If the Chippewas can get players like Anthony Pritchard who had 15 points, five rebounds, and six assists against the Cardinals, and Derrick Butler who had 14 points and six rebounds against Ball State to continue to play this well, Central Michigan can be a top tier team in the MAC this season.
Eastern Michigan has won three of their last four games and they defeated a good Kent State team in overtime to get their first conference win of the season. The Eagles in their last game lost on the road in overtime to Bowling Green by only two points. Against the Golden Flashes, Eastern Michigan held Kent State to only 69 points and the Eagles behind Orlando Lovejoy's game-high 16 points were able to defeat the Golden Flashes to get a much-needed victory.
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies have won three straight games and are a half-game out of first place in the Horizon League currently. Oakland has played a difficult schedule this season and earlier won their last two games in the Cayman Islands Classic and defeated Xavier on the road.
The Golden Grizzlies played well overall against Green Bay led by Trey Townsend's game-high 28 along with 11 rebounds. Both the Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies are tied for third place at 4-2 each in the Horizon League standings.
