NCAA Basketball: 8 teams who managed to survive 2024 transfer portal madness
Purdue Boilermakers
In the Big Ten, Coach Tom Izzo of Michigan State has become the face of the “anti-portal” world. But there’s another coach who doesn’t take a lot of transfers in as well. Matt Painter is coming off a national title appearance, using just one transfer from the past season (Lance Jones).
Jones is gone, along with two-time National Player of the Year big man, Zach Edey. That’s the biggest individual loss this NCAA Basketball offseason, while also losing two role players in Big Ten 6th Man of the Year Mason Gillis, as well as Ethan Morton.
But Purdue still has plenty of depth. In fact, maybe too much. Starting guards Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer are back, along with starting forward, Trey Kaufmann-Renn. He’s one of the few former top-100 prospects set for potentially a larger role without Edey around, along with guys like Myles Colving, Caleb Furst, and William Berg.
Add a top-15 incoming recruiting class and the Boilermakers will be as deep as possible. And the lack of extra player departures has made things easy for the staff in not needing to add anyone else. That’s what Coach Painter seems to want and lately, it’s been working for them.
