NCAA Basketball: Historic week so far with several top-ranked teams falling

Many very unexpected upsets occurred in college basketball on Tuesday, January 9th and Wednesday the 10th that not many fans and basketball analyst's saw coming.

Let's take a look at the top upsets from Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Nebraska's win over No. ranked Purdue was the first time in 41 years that the Cornhuskers defeated a top ranked teams like they did when they defeated top-ranked Missouri over 40 years ago.

The number one ranked team in the country lost by 16 points to an unranked team.

Iowa State defeated the last undefeated team in division one men's basketball on Tuesday night. However, it shouldn't be a complete surprise because the Cyclones won its seventh victory against a top-10 team during the past two seasons which is the most out of any division one team.

The number two ranked team in the nation lost on the road in a low scoring game against an unranked opponent.

57. 461. Final. 53. 450. Iowa State vs. Houston

The University of Central Florida were defeated in their Big 12 season opener when they lost at Kansas State by 25 points. However, when they played the other team in the conference from the state of Kansas, the outcome was different. The Knights not only defeated the No. 3 team in the country but they also won their first Big 12 game in their first season in the the Big 12.

The number three ranked team in the country was defeated by a team that is ranked currently at No. 79 in KenPom and No. 78 in the NET rankings.

65. 455. Final. 60. 462. UCF vs. Kansas

Mississippi State’s win over Tennessee was their first victory over a top 5 ranked opponent since they beat the Oklahoma Sooners over 22 years ago. This upset was even more significant as it was the the fourth top five ranked team to get upset within a period of 24 hours.

The number five team in the nation lost on the road to a team that won their first SEC game of the season when they defeated the Volunteers.

There were other ranked teams who were upset as well.

TCU may have been upset by how their game against Kansas ended in which they lost on the road to the Jayhawks by only two points. However, the Horn Frogs bounced back in a big way when they upset No. 9 ranked Oklahoma on Wednesday night. TCU defeated Oklahoma by nine points and gave the Sooners their second loss of the season.

Not only did Butler defeat No. 11 ranked Marquette, but they beat them on the road for their first true road win of the season. The Bulldogs have come a long way from last season when they were 6-14 in Big East play and even though Butler has improved this season, it was still a surprise that they defeated the Golden Eagles on Wednesday night.

No. 17 ranked Colorado State had a great start to the season but after losing on the road to Utah State, the Rams lost to Boise State on the road on Tuesday night for their only third loss of the season. Colorado State now needs to find a way to climb up the Mountain West standing after suffering the upset loss.

No. 21 ranked Clemson has had a good season but when they traveled to play Virginia Tech, the Tigers were upset and lost by 15 points. The Hokies lost their last two games prior to their upset win over Clemson. This loss was the Tigers third straight loss and they started the season 9-0.

Will there be more upsets on Thursday night? Maybe with the way this week is going and it is not beyond a reasonable doubt the Michigan State upsets No. 10 ranked Illinois or Santa Clara upsets No. 23 Gonzaga.
