NCAA Basketball: Louisville, DePaul, and SMU are rebuilding back to relevancy
After the nets are cut down, NCAA basketball is no longer about building upon a foundation, it's about change. In-game adjustments used to be the most important changes a team could make. Now, it's the summer changes that are most important.
Everything is changing at a higher rate than in the past, whether it be conferences, players, or coaches. The transfer portal has surpassed the coaching carousel as the most important and active aspect of the offseason. Much like the portal, the coaching changes have not only seem to become more abundant but the names involved have become more high profile.
As this edition of the carousel slows to a stop, 66 schools finish the ride with a different rider than they began. Most notable is the change that took place in Lexington with John Calipari leaving Kentucky. There was also Pat Kelsey leaving Charleston for Louisville allowing Chris Mack to return to coaching to take his place and Dusty May left Florida Atlantic to take over for Juwan Howard at Michigan.
As always, many teams made coaching changes because the previous regime wasn't working out. But it became notable that three teams in particular that have been stuck in the quicksand at the bottom of their respective conferences made hires that raised eyebrows. In an age where fortunes can change in the blink of an eye, these teams are looking to go from doormat to at the very least teams that can no longer be overlooked.
