NCAA Basketball: Predicted Winners of last 17 Conference Tournaments of 2023-24
By Bryan Mauro
WAC
Dates: March 13th-16th
Location: Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, NV
Top Seed: Grand Canyon Antelopes
Winner: Grand Canyon Antelopes
There was a time not long ago when everyone was talking about a Grand Canyon at large bid. The Lopes did lose a couple of games in the WAC that took them out of the running for that but as it stands Grand Canyon is the best team in the league by a wide margin and they are the one team that a power conference team does not want to see next to their name in the NCAA tournament. The Antelopes have a ton of guys who can beat you, shoot the ball well, take smart shots, and play smothering defense. They are vulnerable against a team that can get hot from outside and isn’t going to foul much. Grand Canyon and their 80-point game average is impressive but it's more impressive knowing that they do most of that damage driving the ball inside and getting to the foul line. Grand Canyon is good and will put a scare and potentially beat a big-name team in the NCAA tournament.
Sleeper: Abilene Christian Wildcats
The WAC is another league that was dominated by the top 4 seeds in the league and the sleeper is whatever team can get hot and put a scare in the top team. That team this year is Abilene Christian, they enter the tournament having won 7 of their last 8 games, and that makes them the hottest team in the league.
The Wildcats do have a few guys, mainly Ali Abdou Dibba who can make enough shots to keep the Wildcats in it and put a scare into the top teams. Abilene Christian likely won’t win the league but they can make a deeper run against the lower-tier teams.
