NCAA Basketball Recruiting: 9 teams who should target former Purdue commit Kanon Catchings
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Irish aren’t in the Big Ten but they’re another local team with potential. Coach Micah Shrewsberry has two quality freshman building blocks to work with in guards Braeden Shrewsberry and Markus Burton but needs to find other key offensive contributors. It’s a big opportunity for Catchings to come in and very well start as a freshman, playing an even bigger role than he would’ve at Purdue.
Texas Longhorns
The early offseason departure of top-40 guard Cam Scott had potentially opened a hole for the team on the wings. They did land a pair of Indiana State transfers in Julian Larry and Jayson Kent while also having 5-star commit Tre Johnson, who could be part of a 3-guard lineup. But it’s a roster that could use another talented player, as they head to the SEC.
Virginia Cavaliers
Including guard Reece Beekman, the Cavaliers lost most of their scoring production from this past season. In fact, unless Duke transfer TJ Power has a breakout campaign next year, this team could be in trouble on offense. They do have guys like Andrew Rohde and Elijah Gertrude on board but Catchings would be an offensive upgrade and very well could start.
As we’ve seen with past guys like DeAndre Hunter and Ryan Dunn, tall and athletic wings can thrive under coach Tony Bennett, who has a national title on his resume. This is a sneaky option for someone like Catchings who can have a big impact early and play for a winning program.
