NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 12 teams in play for 5-star 2025 SG Trey McKenney
One of the very best players in the 2025 NCAA Basketball recruiting class is Trey McKenney, a 6’4 shooting guard out of Flint, Michigan. He’s a consensus top-20 prospect overall, listed as a 5-star player per 247sportsComposite. McKenney has a natural build for a modern-day off-guard, is gifted with an all-around offensive game, and is capable of scoring anywhere on the court.
The recruitment for McKenney has been strong for the past year, with several teams getting early traction for his services. As a solidfied 5-star prospect, other big-name schools have gotten into the mix. There’s now a set of schools officially getting visits from McKenney in the coming months.
Between those that have gotten official and unofficial visits, there are now 14 programs that have been linked with McKenney. Do any of them stand out on paper? Here’s a closer look at how he’d fit with each of the “possible” options.
Creighton Bluejays
One of the best shooting guards in all of NCAA Basketball in the last two years has been Trey Alexander, who averaged 15.6 ppg as an All-Big East performer. He’s now gone, replaced by Texas Tech transfer, Pop Isaacs. Even if he’s around for two years, McKenney could easily play the third guard in a future Creighton lineup thanks to his size and in Coach Greg McDermott’s system, could very well thrive.
Georgetown Hoyas
The rebuilding efforts for the Hoyas continue with Coach Ed Cooley, looking to land its first true big fish from either the portal or the high school route. The sell would be that all eyes would be on McKenney, who’d have the chance to be the focal point of the offense on Day 1. The concern would be that compared to other options, his chances of winning wouldn’t be as high.
