NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 12 teams in play for 5-star 2025 SG Trey McKenney

As one of the two local options, McKenney is the first major test for the new HC, Dusty May. His first big move was actually landing another talented shooting guard, transfer Roddy Gayle Jr. from Ohio State. Regardless of how long he stays, Michigan could easily pair him with McKenney on the perimeter at the three-spot, since senior Nimari Burnett is expected to start there next season. The Wolverines may need him to make a later decision instead of before the season starts to prove that they’re back to being a viable and competitive program.

Michigan State Spartans

While rival Michigan is starting over, Michigan State remains one of the most stable and consistent programs in all of NCAA Basketball, thanks to Coach Tom Izzo. They’re also a program that’s rebuilding in its backcourt, especially once Jaden Akins and transfer Frankie Fidler leave after next season. McKenney would definitely be a focal point as a freshman and get to stay close to home. But are the Spartans still a Final Four contender or have they taken a step back compared to other options on this list?

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

After landing a top-20 incoming freshman class, Coach Micah Shrewsberry is looking for another star to pair with the starting guard, Markus Burton and Braeden Shrewsberry. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact top-40 guard prospect Sir Mohammed has next season because he could be the third starter in the backcourt. This could be a scenario where McKenney could consider them, depending on what kind of jump the team makes this upcoming season.
