NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 12 teams in play for 5-star 2025 SG Trey McKenney
TCU Horned Frogs
Coach Jamie Dixon’s teams at TCU have been best when a star emerges on offense. McKenney would be a nice go-to scorer in the Big Ten, even as a freshman. Noah Reynolds and Frankie Collins would be gone after next season and unless freshmen transfers (Vasean Allette and RJ Jones) have a big year, there’d be a big need for someone like McKenney to join them.
UCLA Bruins
UCLA will be losing two key senior guards on the roster after next season in Lazar Stefanovic and Kobe Johnson. But there are plenty of guards that’ll still be around, including transfers Skyy Clark and Dom Harris, along with incoming four-star freshmen, Eric Fenny and Trent Perry. Unless some of the depth clears up, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of pitch the program can make for McKenney, who wouldn’t be guaranteed a starting spot here.
USC Trojans
New HC Eric Musselman is known for his work in the transfer portal but he also landed several 5-star prospects during his time at Arkansas. That includes Anthony Black, who eventually became a top-10 NBA Draft pick over a year ago. The Trojans have a bunch of senior transfers they’ll need to replace, as well as potentially Desmond Claude, the star transfer guard from Xavier who could be a pro prospect to watch.
One thing is clear, all of these teams have something to offer for Trey McKenney. That includes some pros and cons, which makes sense since in the transfer portal era, all of the rosters are new. We’ll see if Michigan and Michigan State stand out as contenders and whether or not Dusty May can beat out Tom Izzo in their first big recruitment.
