NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 7 team contenders for Kentucky transfer Ugonna Onyenso
Oklahoma Sooners
Despite keeping its head coach, Oklahoma had its own roster exodus, losing all of its key rotation pieces to the transfer portal. That includes guys like John Hugley and guards Otega Oweh and Milos Uzan. So far, they’ve landed JUCO transfer forward Jeff Nwankwo and former Alabama big man, Mohamed Wague.
On paper, Onyenso would definitely be a starter for the Sooners, who’ll be moving to the SEC. The problem is that also on paper, this roster isn’t good enough to compete in its new league as a postseason contender. The minutes would be there but the potential of winning might now be.
North Carolina Tar Heels
The Heels are a preseason top-15 team for next season no matter what, thanks to their returning ACC Player of the Year guard, RJ Davis. With Belmont transfer Cade Tyson, the perimeter is set. However, the frontcourt still has issues, thanks to Armando Bacot moving on and Harrison Ingram entering the NBA Draft.
UNC has tried to replace them, including notable transfer targets, Adou Thiero and Cliff Omoruyi. They weren’t able to land either, leaving clear holes. This is the option where Onyenso not only would start and get plenty of minutes but it would be for a preseason Final Four contender.
