NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 3 teams for 3-star CG Omari Witherspoon
One of the top available class of 2025 NCAA Basketball prospects in the Washington D.C. area is Omari Witherspoon, a 6'4 guard and consensus three-star recruit. His size and ball-handling makes him a solid prospect and with his overall offensive game taking a leap, has seen his interest rise among the power conference programs.
Now, there are officially three in the running ahead of a decision this week. Which of them makes the most sense from a roster and fit standpoint for Witherspoon? Here's a closer look.
Maryland Terrapins
As the "hometown" option, Maryland will be trying to keep another local talent with them. The selling point is having Witherspoon become another Jahmir Young, who was an All-Big Ten performer for the team last season. They have Belmont transfer JaKobi Gillespie on board but guard depth was an issue for them so the prospect could find a way to crack the rotation as a freshman, even if DeShawn Harris-Smith is around for the long haul.
Pittsburgh Panthers
A program that has developed a pipeline in the DMV area is Coach Jeff Capel and the Panthers, including last year's star freshman and eventual NBA Draft lottery pick, Bub Carrington. There's also Ishmael Leggett, a native of the area and a rising senior on the roster. Pittsburgh has shown a willingness to play freshmen and if Jaland Lowe becomes a candidate to leave early too, there would be plenty of room for Witherspoon to be part of the rotation.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vandy seems like an outlier in the group but new Coach Mark Byington has a good history of guard development, dating back to the James Madison run. The team also has multiple senior guards that will need to be replaced, including incoming transfers, AJ Hoggard, Grant Huffman, and Chris Manon.
The Commodores already have a class of 2025 commit in Jaylon Dean-Vines but Witherspoon would be a nice second guard addition early on in the recruiting cycle. Plus, the team can sell him on being in the SEC, one of the top basketball conferences in the NCAA Basketball.
