NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 6 teams for San Francisco transfer Mike Sharavjamts
Sophomore guard/ wing Mike Sharavjamts is down to six NCAA Basketball programs. Which of them is the best potential fit?
After starting 20 games and earning all-freshman honors in the Atlantic 10, Mike Sharavjamts decided to transfer out west to San Francisco. The 6'8 wing started all 34 games for the Dons, averaging 7.7 ppg and 2.7 apg, shooting 42% from the field and 36% from deep. That includes a season-high 18 points in a win over Seattle.
After the season ended, Sharavjamts parted ways with the Dons, entering the portal again. There are reportedly six teams in the mix to land him, including a few more from out west. Below is a look at how he'd fit with each of them.
BYU Cougars
The Cougars were after Sharavjamts a year ago and have an even bigger need for him this time around, as leading scoring wing Jaxson Robinson has entered the portal, though he could come back. New head coach Kevin Young comes from the NBA and for a possible pro like Sharavjamts, that could be an interesting sell right now, along with being able to play in the Big 12.
Cal Bears
Coach Mark Madsen has been busy in the transfer portal so far, landing nine transfers so far. That includes plenty on the perimeter, including Air Force transfer Rytis Petraitis and 6'7 wing from Stanford, Andrej Stojakovic. The issue here is that there's a great chance the former Don could get lost in the shuffle and end up at the bottom of the depth chart. In year 3, that would be a big mistake on his side.
Saint Louis Billikens
New head coach Josh Schertz ran one of the best offenses in all of NCAA Basketball last season at Indiana State, while bringing with him two great players (Isaiah Swope and Robbie Avila) with him. Plus. sharpshooter Gibson Jimerson is back as well. Sharavjamts could find a role with the Billikens as they continue to build depth but since the wing positions are already taken, he'd have to settle for a 6th Man type of role.
Saint Mary's Gaels
Although San Francisco's profile has risen in the past few years, they still aren't at the level of Saint Mary's, a consistent top-25 team. But they've had a rare rough offseason, losing two key starters. One of them is leading scoring guard Aidan Mahaney, who transferred out to UConn. The obvious sell for Sharavjamts if you're the Gaels is to offer Mahaney's old role and minutes to him.
Utah State Aggies
The Aggies hired former Youngstown State head coach Jerod Calhoun, who has a history of good transfer pickups. He's done a good job at keeping the Aggies' roster stable, bringing back guards Mason Falsev and Ian Martinez, while also adding double-digit scoring guard transfers, Deyton Albury and Drake Allen. Despite this being a rebuild Mountain West team, a case can be made that of all six teams, this one offers the least amount of surefire minutes to the guard.
Washington State Cougars
The Cougars basketball program is now in the WCC, where Sharavjamts just came from. So he knows it's a level he can play well at. And it's also an option where he'd be a focal point, since all of the main guards have all hit the transfer portal themselves. This could be an option where he can put up a ton of numbers, though the liklehood of playing in the postseason won't be high unless they added other pieces.
