NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking 6 teams in play for FSU transfer Jamir Watkins
For some players who enter the NCAA Basketball transfer portal, going from a mid-major league to one in the power conference ranks can be a struggle in terms of adapting to tougher competition. One of the exceptions to that last season was Jamir Watkins, a 6'7 forward from Trenton, New Jersey.
Watkins spent two years at VCU, where he started 19 games and averaged 9.5 ppg and 5.4 rpg as a sophomore. After a coaching change, he transferred to Florida State, where he ultimately became the lone brightspot on a team that massively underachieved.
The junior forward had a true breakout campaign this past season, leading the Seminoles in all three main offensive categories. Watkins averaged 15.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.8 apg, as well as nearly two steals a game. As a full-time starter, Watkins also shot 46% from the field and made 80% of his FT attempts at over six a game.
Some of Watkins top individual games include 27 points and 11 rebounds against Syracuse, 26 points versus Virginia Tech, as well as a career-high 34 points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Hokies in the ACC Tournament.
After the season, Watkins entered both the transfer portal and the NBA Draft. At the deadline that recently passed, the junior forward elected to stay in NCAA Basketball for one more year. And now, we know which teams are in position to land him, with a couple reportedly getting visits in the coming week.
Focusing on the ability to win and likely playing time, here's a power ranking of the six teams in play for Watkins.
