4. Ryan Nembhard (Gonzaga)

After incredible work as an underclassman at Creighton, Nembhard opted to transfer to Gonzaga this past offseason, landing at the same school where brother Andrew ended his career a few years earlier. The younger Nembhard had been a full-time starter his first two seasons with the Bluejays, leading Creighton to the Elite Eight in his second season with impressive numbers across the board.

Success would follow him to the West Coast, as he’d put up 12.6 points and 6.9 assists per game in another fine season for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga may not have looked as dominant this year as in past seasons, but Nembhard’s addition was a definite catalyst for their late success. Nembhard finished among the national leaders in assists, was named First Team All-WCC, and inspired the team on another run to the Sweet Sixteen.

A reliable weapon early in the season, Nembhard’s game really came on in the back half of Gonzaga’s season. Not only did he have numerous 20-point efforts, but he had six double-doubles including a 20-point, 10-assist effort in the regular season finale at Saint Mary’s. He accumulated 28 assists in the Bulldogs’ three NCAA Tournament games and played well against both Kansas and Purdue. We’ll never know how he or Creighton would have looked had he stayed in the Big East, but there’s no doubt that hs game came on strong by season’s end.
