1. Terrence Shannon Jr. (Illinois)

The allegations against Shannon put a damper on his season, and he was suspended for nearly a full month in December and January. That being said, the former Texas Tech wing was playing inspired basketball in his second and final season for Illinois and truly developed into one of the nation’s best players by season’s end.

In totality, Shannon averaged 23.0 points and 4.0 rebounds while making 36% of his 3-pointers, though that barely tells the story. He was named a Third Team All-American, First Team All-Big Ten, and MVP of the Big Ten Tournament, with his best basketball coming at the end of the season. Shannon ended the year in the Top 10 in total points in the country and led Illinois to their first Elite Eight in nearly two decades.

There were many nights when Shannon was on his game, dropping 33 on Florida Atlantic or 35 at Penn State. He really came alive in March, including a 40-point effort in the Big Ten Tournament against Nebraska en route to a title. He had at least 26 points in the Illini’s three Tourney wins before falling in the Elite Eight and was playing on another level before his team was smacked by the eventual champions. Regardless of the stuff off the court, Shannon proved his value while he was out there for Illinois.
