5. Jonas Aidoo (Tennessee)

Rick Barnes has done fantastic work during his near decade at Tennessee and relentless defense has been one of his calling cards. Aidoo just finished his junior year and third season under Barnes’ tutelage and he’s certainly developed into a significant force in that defense. That being said, Aidoo played a nice role on offense as well.

A starting frontcourt piece for the Volunteers, Aidoo averaged 11.4 points and 7.3 rebounds this season, taking a major step forward after getting much less run as an underclassman. Named First Team All-SEC, he also secured a spot on the league’s All-Defense team and was among the league’s leaders in blocks, rebounds, and several defensive metrics.

Aidoo brought it on defense on a regular basis and wasn’t expected to bare the load on the other end, but that didn’t stop him from some standout performances. He dropped 29 points on Georgia Southern in one of the final nonconference tune ups, and had a 23-point, 12-rebound effort in a road win at Arkansas. The Volunteers advanced to the Elite Eight, and while Aidoo’s offensive numbers weren’t awesome during that run he was a reliable tool at the backend on defense.
