8. Matthew Murrell (Mississippi)

A lot has changed since Murrell arrived at Ole Miss four years ago. The former 4-star was certainly highly regarded even before joining the Rebels and would live up to that across the next few seasons. Murrell was a role player early on and has been a starting guard each of the last three seasons. Frankly, the Memphis native was a major piece of this season’s bounce back effort for the program, even though they fell short of the NCAA Tournament.

Murrell, now playing under new head coach Chris Beard, would average 16.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in his senior season, making a career-best 39.8% from outside the arc. His numbers put him as one of the top 10 scorers in the league, earning him Second Team All-SEC honors. Murrell was also sixth in steals, fourth in free throw percentage, and sixth in effective field goal percentage.

Murrell was a big part of Mississippi’s hot start to the season, including 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in their early December win over Memphis. He’d drop a season-high 26 points in wins over both Southern Miss and Missouri, though he alone wasn’t enough as the Rebels settled for a 10th place finish in the SEC. You’ll find few complaints with his level of production on a 20-win team, though the Rebels just weren’t in the same class as some of their conference rivals.
