NCAA Basketball: Top 10 players to wear jersey No. 12 in 2023-24 season
By Joey Loose
9. Denver Jones (Auburn)
Previously, Jones proved that he was a high profile scorer while at Florida International. His work as an underclassman was phenomenal, averaging more than 20 points per game as a sophomore, becoming one of the top scorers in Conference USA. He clearly wasn’t going to match that level of production after transferring to Auburn, but Jones still found a productive role from the Tigers’ backcourt.
Jones would average 9.1 points per game and make nearly 42% of his 3-pointers, obviously taking fewer shots than the previous year in the CUSA. He wasn’t exactly the standout star at Auburn this season, but the junior played his role during a 27-win season that included a 2nd place finish in the SEC. You won’t find Jones among the SEC’s leaders in the important categories but his importance can’t be expressed just in pure numbers and relatable figures.
He dropped 13 points in the season opener against Baylor, the first of several double-digit affairs throughout the season. Jones later had 12 in a win over Indiana before coming into his own in the back half of SEC play. Among the notable efforts were 19 points against Vanderbilt and 21 over Georgia in the regular season finale. Jones also helped lead the Tigers to an SEC Tournament title, scoring 13 points in the semifinals win against Florida.
