Honorable Mentions

Makhi Mitchell (Arkansas)

A well-traveled forward originally from Washington DC, Mitchell started at Maryland, transferred to Rhode Island, and has now spent his last two years with Arkansas. He put up valiant numbers for the Razorbacks this past season, averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds off the bench. This likely wasn’t exactly the type of season that Mitchell or this Arkansas program as a whole expected, but he still showed his worth when on the court.

Luis Rodriguez (UNLV)

Following four years at Ole Miss, Rodriguez landed at UNLV and has played a critical role for the Runnin’ Rebels recently. His final collegiate season saw him average 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game with decent steals numbers as well. Rodriguez was actually named to the MWC All-Defense team as a result and helped UNLV to a sneaky good season with a 4th place finish in the conference.

Matt Rogers (American)

Rogers has developed into an important forward for the Eagles in recent years, especially coming on as an upperclassman. This past senior year saw him averaging 16.3 points and 6.2 rebounds a game, establishing himself as American’s most important player, leading them in both categories. More important was his role in leading the Eagles to 2nd place in the conference and First Team All-Patriot League honors for himself.

Richie Saunders (BYU)

Sophomore year is an important season for college basketball players and Saunders certainly took a step forward in his second year on the court. He remained a bench piece for the Cougars but aided BYU in their transition to the Big 12, averaging 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Saunders shot the ball well, didn’t have many turnovers, and helped get the Cougars back to the NCAA Tournament.

Jamal West (Nicholls State)

West showed potential in two years at South Alabama before landed at Clarendon College in Texas, though he certainly bounced back in a major way this past season. In his initial season at Nicholls State, West would put up 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, becoming the lead rebounder and a major playmaker for the Colonels during a 20-win campaign. He also earned Second Team All-Southland and was on the league’s All-Defense team as the conference’s blocks leader.
