7. Spencer Johnson (Stanford)

Way back in 2018 Johnson arrived at Weber State but never played for the Wildcats, redshirting before transferring to the junior college level. His real arrival came at BYU in 2020, the first of four productive seasons in Provo with the Cougars. He was a reliable bench weapon his first two seasons and developed into an important starter in their backcourt this past year.

Johnson averaged 10.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, starting all 34 games for the Cougars. Not only did he have another reliable season but it came as BYU entered the Big 12 with a bang, finishing in 5th place and getting back to the Big Dance. His emphatic final season saw him sit among the conference’s leaders in both rebounds and steals, becoming a major contributor even without the finest shooting numbers of his career.

Starting the season with 20 points against Houston Christian was stellar, though Johnson would top that with 22 points against Fresno State a few weeks later. Yet some of his best work came during league play against a strong Big 12, with the highlight being 28 points and 9 rebounds in BYU’s stellar win over Iowa State. While the Cougars were upended by Duquesne in the NCAA Tournament, Johnson did have 11 points and 16 rebounds with an impressive performance.
