NCAA Basketball: Top 10 players to wear jersey No. 22 in 2023-24 season
By Joey Loose
3. Riley Minix (Morehead State)
For the first four years of his collegiate journey, Minix was a relative unknown. He starred in the NAIA level at Southeastern, a school in Florida. At that level he was certainly known, becoming one of the best NAIA players in the country, but that level of basketball doesn’t exactly have the eyes of the nation on it. This year was different as Minix transferred to Morehead State for his fifth and final year of eligibility and took great advantage of that bonus season in D1.
Exceedingly impactful for the Eagles, Minix averaged 20.9 points and 9.7 rebounds, making 64% of his 2-pointers, 35% of his 3-pointers, and 84% of his free throws. He showed little difficulty with the transition, winning OVC Player of the Year as the conference’s top scorer. More importantly, Minix led Morehead State to another regular season title in the OVC and keyed their efforts to return to the Big Dance.
Minix played well in some tough losses and easy blowouts during nonconference play and would be even more impressive against the OVC. He had 34 points at Southeast Missouri State and a pair of 30-point efforts during a long run of double-doubles. Minix was named OVC Tournament MVP in leading the Eagles to the title, scoring 26 points in the semifinals and title game. His career would end with another fine performance, putting up 27 points against Illinois in the Tourney.
