1. Devin Carter (Providence)

Carter spent his freshman season at South Carolina playing under Frank Martin where he’d get decent run mostly off the bench. After a coaching change, Carter opted to transfer and found a new home with Providence. He’s thrived under two different coaching staffs with the Friars and is fresh off a marvelous junior season. Even though Providence didn’t quite achieve their preseason goals, Carter certainly stood out among the talent in the Big East.

In year two in Providence Carter put up 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, improving virtually every part of his game as an upperclassman. He made 38% of his 3-pointers, had nearly two steals a game, and was the league’s top scorer. Despite Providence missing the Big Dance and finishing 6th in the league, Carter was still named Big East Player of the Year for his impressive efforts on both sides of the ball.

Early on, Carter showed his promise with a 21-point performance against Wisconsin and a series of double-doubles. He’d have a 31-point, 13-rebound game at St. John’s and would soon after have 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists in a win over Creighton. He averaged nearly 23 points per game in the Big East Tournament, including another upset of the Bluejays, before UConn ended his season. Could he be one of the next great defensive guards in the NBA?
