8. Dillon Mitchell (Texas)

It’s fair to say that Mitchell didn’t live up to early expectations. A 5-star forward from Tampa, he was considered one of the top prospects in the Class of 2022 and opted for Texas and Chris Beard. His numbers weren’t impressive despite starting every game of his freshman season, though he remained in the program this year under new coach Rodney Terry. Mitchell would take a step forward as a sophomore.

This season saw him average 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds while playing significantly more minutes for the Longhorns. Mitchell was a frontcourt starter again and helped Texas on another solid season and trip to the Big Dance. He actually ranked second in the league in rebound per game and had good defensive metrics, including 0.9 blocks a game. Mitchell also made 60% of his field goal attempts from inside the arc and was a more reliable paint presence for this team.

He’d play well during nonconference play, with a number of double-doubles. Notably Mitchell had 21 points and 8 rebounds in a tough loss to eventual champion UConn back in November and had some nice efforts during Big 12 play later on. Among the notable games were 13 rebounds in a road win at Oklahoma and a 13-point, 11-rebound game at TCU. His performances in the Big Dance were underwhelming, but Mitchell helped get the Longhorns into the second round.
