NCAA Basketball: Top 10 players to wear jersey No. 3 in 2023-24 season
By Joey Loose
5. Max Abmas (Texas)
The country got to know Abmas three seasons ago when he spearheaded Oral Roberts’ trip to the Sweet Sixteen as a 15-seed. He became an offensive powerhouse in the Summit League, averaging more than 21 points a game in his final three seasons with the Golden Eagles. Instead of staying in Tulsa, Abmas opted to transfer for his fifth and final collegiate campaign and found quite the landing spot at Texas.
Settling in as Texas’s top offensive weapon, Abmas didn’t quite match those numbers with Oral Roberts, but no one complained as he averaged 16.8 points and 4.1 assists per game. He remained an elite shooter, making 36% of his 3-pointers and greater than 90% from the charity stripe. The transition to the Big 12 wasn’t too much for Abmas in the long run, earning Second Team honors in the conference while finishing third in points scored.
Abmas showed up with some great performances, scoring 32 points against Marquette and 33 several weeks later at West Virginia. This wasn’t an all or nothing; Abmas was impacting the game on a daily basis. He was the leading scorer for the Longhorns, guiding them to an NCAA Tournament win over Colorado State before their season ended in the second round. The numbers took a slight dip, but Abmas was still playing outstanding basketball against the Big 12 after all those years as a mid-major stud.
