NCAA Basketball: Top 10 players to wear jersey No. 33 in 2023-24 season
By Joey Loose
3. Jeremiah Hernandez (Southern Indiana)
Hernandez began his college career at Kent State but wasn’t exactly getting much run with the Golden Flashes. After redshirting and then spending two years a bench piece, Hernandez chose to transfer and found a new home a Southern Indiana, joining the program at the beginning of their transition to D1 athletics. Year one with the Screaming Eagles wasn’t much different for Hernandez but this past season showcased his potential.
The senior averaged 17.2 points and 3.3 rebounds as a major contributor, taking a significant step forward in his second season at Southern Indiana. His explosion onto the scene saw him emerge as one of the OVC’s top offensive players, earning him First Team All-OVC honors. Still struggling with their transition, the Screaming Eagles won just 8 games this season but much of that limited success was thankful to Hernandez’s growth this year.
Things started slowly for Hernandez and this program, but he really hit his stride by the time OVC play began in late December. He exploded onto the scene with a 35-point effort in overtime against Southeast Missouri State and would score 28 against Little Rock and 30 on Morehead State just a few weeks later. These types of performance continued for the rest of the season, though Southern Indiana just didn’t have the talent around Hernandez to win many games in this league.
