7. Mason Walters (Wyoming)

Before this season, Walters had zero experience with D1 basketball. He had spent the first four years of his collegiate career at Jamestown, an NAIA university in his hometown in North Dakota. During that time he had transformed his game into one of the best NAIA players in the country. That success found him D1 interest and Walters landed at Wyoming for one final ride, now at the D1 level.

Unfortunately, a significant injury kept Walters from making his Cowboys debut until mid-December, but he still managed to average 12.2 points and 5.4 rebounds on the year. Most of his games were against a tough MWC and he managed to hold his own, handling the adjustment from NAIA. He was part of a Wyoming squad that eked out 8th place in the league, finishing just below .500.

In his first game with the Cowboys, Walters actually scored 12 points in an impressive win over South Dakota State, a future Tourney team. Much of his game action came against MWC foes. He scored 17 points against eventual league champion Utah State and dropped 22 points in a road win at Air Force. While Walters would score in double figures in upsets over Colorado State and Nevada, he more importantly fit right in at the D1 level after that dominance at NAIA.
