2. Johni Broome (Auburn)

As an underclassman, Broome was a menace at Morehead State, becoming the best defensive weapon in the OVC by his sophomore year. Instead of continuing in Kentucky, he transferred to Auburn and has faced much stiffer competition these last two years. While he hasn’t quite averaged a double-double like as a sophomore, Broome has accepted the challenge of SEC basketball and developed into one of the nation’s most prominent frontcourt pieces.

In his second season starting at Auburn Broome would average 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, with 2.2 blocks per game as well. He earned First Team All-SEC honors, ranking among the best in the league in points, rebounds, and blocks. Broome actually finished 10th in the nation in blocked shots while also playing consistently on the offensive side of things as well for an Auburn team that finished 2nd in the SEC.

During the Tigers’ 27-win season there were plenty of standout moments from Broome. He had 30 points and 13 rebounds in a nonconference win over Virginia Tech and would have nearly 50 points combined in two games against rival Alabama. Not only did he score in double figures in every SEC game, his strong play in the postseason earned him SEC Tournament MVP honors as Auburn won the league tournament. Broome had 24 points and 13 rebounds in the Big Dance against Yale, so it’s hard to blame that disaster on him.
