NCAA Basketball: Top 25 team winners from 2024 transfer portal results
1. Alabama Crimson Tide
Like every team in NCAA Basketball, Alabama lost some key pieces to the portal, including the previously mentioned Rylan Griffen to Kansas. But they were able to land four notable names including Aden Holloway, a rival from Auburn and former 5-star prospect, averaging 7.3 ppg and 2.7 apg in 26 starts.
Also entering the new backcourt is Chris Youngblood, the Co-AAC Player of the Year from South Florida. He led the team with 15.3 ppg on 42% shooting from three-point range and was one of the best impact transfers from last season. Houston Mallette was one of the first transfer pickups this offseason, a 6’5 guard from Pepperdine who produced 14.7 ppg on 42% shooting from deep.
The biggest name Alabama landed was Cliff Omoruyi, a 6’10 center from Rutgers. He’s one of the best interior defenders in the country, averaging 10.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and nearly three blocks a game. The view has been that the team has lacked a real interior presence on the inside and this was viewed as one of the best natural fits of any transfer pickup.
Alabama landed multiple proven shooters, an elite rim protector, and a long-term guard prospect to replace star guard Mark Sears a year from now. Coach Nate Oats managed to accomplish everything needed with the roster inside and out, setting them up possibly to be the team to beat next season.
