20. Maryland Terrapins

Losing star guard Jahmir Young was a blow for Maryland but after finishing under .500, the team knew it had to blow up the roster and revamp the backcourt, adding needed shooting to surround returning guard, DeShawn Harris-Smith.

The expected replacement for Young at point guard is Ja’Kobi Gillespie, a transfer from Belmont. He was one of the top players from the Missouri Valley Conference, averaging 17.2 ppg and 4.2, shooting a whopping 56% from the field and 39% from three-point range. Gillespie also was all-defense in the MVC, making him a valuable all-around player coming into the Big Ten.

The other key guard is Selton Miguel, who was the AAC 6th Man of the Year last season at South Florida. The 6’4 guard averaged 14.7 ppg off the bench, shooting 39% from deep. Jayhlon Young is a recent pickup from Memphis, proving the Terrapins a backup PG behind Gillespie.

Former Georgia Tech forward Tafara Garpare gives them frontcourt depth inside at the four-spot without Donta Scott around, while wing Rodney Rice is the X-factor. He didn’t play last season but averaged 7.4 ppg in eight games as a freshman at Virginia Tech. A big year from him could propel Maryland back into Big Ten contention.
