NCAA Basketball: Way-too-early top-25 power rankings for 2024-25 season
5. Gonzaga Bulldogs
2023-24 season record: 27-8 (14-2 WCC)
After (by their standards) a poor first half to the season, Gonzaga used an upset road win over Kentucky to not only get back to the NCAA Tournament but also make yet another Sweet 16 appearance. But after a year where it felt that the ceiling was lower than normal, next year could be one where they’re back in the one-seed mix.
The Bulldogs do lose Anton Watson, arguably the MVP of the team. He was the best defender and all-around star that ignited the offense. His departure hurts but the team already landed his potential replacement in Michael Ajayi, a 6’7 combo forward who averaged 17.2 ppg and 9.9 rpg at Pepperdine this past season.
Also back is Graham Ike, who led Gonzaga with 16.5 ppg and 7.4 rpg as an impact big man. Forwards Ben Gregg and Braden Huff are returning, along with starting guards, Nolan Hickman and Ryan Nembhard. Dusty Stromer could be in line for a big sophomore campaign while Steele Venters, who missed all of last season with an injury, should be 100% for the 2024-25 campaign.
If Venters can Ajayi can add some shooting, look for Gonzaga to have a top-tier offensive unit next season. They’ll have more competition in the WCC with the arrival of Oregon State and Washington State but the Bulldogs will remain the clear favorite in the league, even over Saint Mary’s.
