NCAA Basketball: Way-too-early top-25 power rankings for 2024-25 season
20. Texas Longhorns
2023-24 season record: 21-13 (9-9 Big 12)
The first full year in the Rodney Terry era was solid, with the Longhorns making the NCAA Tournament and winning a game. But some changes will have to be made, since both of their top players (Max Abmas and Dylan Disu), are moving on. Two other rotation players in guards Ithiel Horton and Brock Cunningham are gone as well.
The good news is that Texas is bringing back some key players, for now. Starting guard Tyrese Hunter (11.1 ppg and 4.1 apg) will be back as the lead guard, while Dillon Mitchell could be primed for a focal role of the offense. Plus, Kadin Shedrick, who started 11 games at center, has a 5th year available as well. Chendall Weaver, who was an impact transfer to the program, will be back as well.
What Texas also has going for them is a top-10 incoming recruiting class, led by top-10 guard prospect, Tre Johnson, If he has a big impact out the gate, he could help replace the lost production from Abmas. Cam Scott is a top-40 shooting guard, while Nic Codie is a four-star forward prospect.
There are still some moving pieces with this team that need to be figured out but right now, there’s a lot to like with the potential. But can Hunter or Mitchell be the best player on a top-25 team?
