K. T. Turner

This next name is a bit unconventional, but do remember that we’re leaving no stone unturned. We could list of a few dozen mid-major coaches from Texas or this part of the country and probably find a few other intriguing candidates, but how about someone with experience in the state, as a power conference coach, and with recent head coaching experience.

Turner graduated from Oklahoma City some twenty years ago before beginning a coaching career that’s had many stops. The most notable of his assistant coaching gigs has been at Wichita State, SMU, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. Turner learned from some great coaches of the sport before taking the head coaching job at UT Arlington last season. He’s led the Mavericks to 18 wins, a marked improvement over last year.

He’s intimately familiar with recruiting this part of the country, played and coached in the state of Oklahoma previously, and has done good work in his first twelve months as a collegiate head coach. Turner spent a few seasons already in the Big 12 and has worked for names like John Calipari, Larry Brown, and Porter Moser in his career. The question is if he’s ready to leave Arlington after just a single season and how intrigued the Cowboys would be by someone without too much head coaching experience.
