Dusty May

Just over a decade ago, there were mid-major names like Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens, and Gregg Marshall connected to every major job opening. We know how their individual situations worked out but that’s not the point right now. A decade later, May is one of the biggest names being thrown at all of these job openings and for good reason; would Oklahoma State be a good fit for him?

May was a student manager at Indiana under Bob Knight in his final years with the Hoosiers. He then bounced around at several schools as an aide and assistant for nearly two decades. The last seven years of that experience came with Mike White at Louisiana Tech and Florida before his head coaching career began at Florida Atlantic in 2018. Though his first four seasons weren’t notable, May broke through last season, leading the Owls not only to a program-record 35 wins but on an incredible run to the Final Four.

His Florida Atlantic team will be in the Big Dance again this season and it’s incredible to see what exactly he’s built in Boca Raton. There was no recent or major history of basketball success at Florida Atlantic, though May has seeming transformed the current trajectory of this program. Once again the major question is both May’s interest in the Cowboys and whether a more lucrative offer comes his way.
