Tennessee Tech's women's basketball team showcased a team effort win in the OVC Tournament opener, clinching a crucial victory against Western Illinois. Leading the charge were standout player Reghan Grimes, with Grimes demonstrating her presence in the paint.

The Golden Eagles' victory, which propels them into the quarterfinals against UT Martin, was marked by a remarkable offensive display, with Maaliya Owens stealing the spotlight. Owens, recently named to the All-OVC first-team roster, dazzled with a 23-point performance, including an impressive six 3-pointers. With only three more triples needed to equal her single-season record, Owens continues to etch her name in Tennessee Tech's basketball history.

Peyton Carter also contributed significantly from beyond the arc, adding five 3-pointers to the Golden Eagles' tally and collecting 15 points overall. Grimes and Anna Walker asserted their dominance in the paint, combining for 31 points, while Walker secured a double-double with 10 rebounds.

However, it was the youthful exuberance of Raegan McCowan that stole the show, as the OVC Freshman of the Year candidate showcased her potential with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. McCowan's stellar performance underscores her bright future in collegiate basketball.

Despite facing foul trouble and a resilient Western Illinois squad, Tennessee Tech maintained composure and capitalized on defensive turnovers to convert into crucial points. The Golden Eagles' defensive tenacity limited their opponents' offensive opportunities, particularly in the second half, where they stifled Western Illinois to secure a commanding lead.

The momentum shift in the third quarter, marked by a 14-0 run, highlighted Tennessee Tech's resilience and determination. Carter's flawless shooting from beyond the arc, coupled with Owens' steady contribution, propelled the Golden Eagles to a decisive victory.
