SEC Basketball: 2024 offseason grades for each team
By Justin Wiles
Oklahoma Sooners - Grade: C+
This offseason brought on a whole host of changes for Oklahoma. Porter Moser had to replace a good portion of his roster, and to make things a little more difficult he needed to add players capable of competing in an entirely new conference. It's hard to tell if Oklahoma’s roster and style of play will work in the SEC, but one thing in Oklahoma’s favor is the fact that it is coming over from arguably the best conference in college basketball, so the transition might not be as extreme.
The Sooners lost its top two scorers from last season, with Javian McCollum and Otega Oweh hitting the portal. On the bright side, Oklahoma returns a double-digit scorer in Jalon Moore, 11.2 points per game. Moore was also the team's top rebounder a year ago. The only other returner for Moser and the Sooners that saw significant minutes was Sam Godwin, the team's second-best rebounder last season with 5.2 per game.
Oklahoma wasn’t the best scoring team last season and with all of the departures was looking pretty thin on that end of the court. So, this offseason Oklahoma added a trio of double-figure scorers. Duke Miles who averaged 17.5 points at High Point, Brycen Goodine, a nearly 14 points per game scorer at Fairfield, and Jadon Jones who averaged just over 12 points per game at Long Beach State.
The Sooners aren’t very deep in the frontcourt, of the six transfers added this offseason only one of them was a true post player, Mohamed Wague who last season at Alabama playing only a handful of minutes each game.
On paper, only Duke Miles looks like a solid starter for Oklahoma, and the rest of the offseason additions appear best suited coming off the bench. Moser added depth this offseason, but it doesn’t look like he made this team better in any obvious ways.
