SEC Basketball: 2024 offseason grades for each team
By Justin Wiles
Georgia Bulldogs - Grade: B
Georgia had quite a bit of work to do this offseason. The Bulldogs lost well over half of its scoring from last season and returned zero players averaging in double figures. Silas Demary, who averaged 9.7 points, was the top returning scorer for Georgia.
Mike White and company did bring in a decent amount of scoring, signing five players from the transfer portal. Three of those five players averaged more than 13 points last season, all of which would have led the Bulldogs in scoring. Georgia added Dakota Laffew from Mount St. Marys where he averaged 17.6 points last season, The Bulldogs also added Tyrin Lawrence from Vanderbilt, and De’Shayne Montgomery from Mount St. Marys. Lawrence and Montgomery both averaged over 13 points per game.
Last season the Bulldogs were pretty average when it came to rebounds, steals, and blocks. Mike White sought out some players to help on the defensive end. He signed RJ Godfrey from Clemson. Godfrey was a good team defender last season, although his numbers don’t necessarily jump off the page. And the addition of Justin Abson should help shore up the interior. Abson spent the last two seasons at Appalachian State, where he averaged 7.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks last year.
Initially, the Bulldogs' offseason didn’t really jump off the page. But, after a closer look, what Georgia did the past few months might put the team in a better spot for next season. Between signing a solid transfer class and signing one of the better recruiting classes in the conference, Georgia should be an improved team across the board. The Bulldogs probably won't win a conference title, but they should be competitive every time they step on the floor.
