SEC Basketball: Ranking the top 20 incoming transfers for the 2024-25 season
By Justin Wiles
01. Johnell Davis (Arkansas)
2023-24 Season at FAU: 18.2 PPG | 6.3 RPG | 2.9 APG | 1.4 SPG | 41.4 3PT%
Johnell Davis was the Co-AAC player of the year this past season, leading FAU to its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Davis was also the best player for the Owls two years ago when the team made its Cinderella run to the Final Four.
Last season, Davis averaged more than 18 points per game, a career-high. He was the most consistent scorer for FAU, hitting double figures in 31 of 34 games. Davis scored more than 30 points three times, with a season-high of 35 points in a win over Arizona. During his time at FAU, Davis increased his scoring average by an impressive 15 points per game while hitting nearly 49 percent of his shots.
Although Davis’s biggest upside lies in his offensive capabilities, he also shines on the defensive end of the court. Last season Davis averaged 6.3 rebounds per game. He grabbed double-digit rebounds three times, recording a double-double in all three of those games. He was within one rebound of five more double-doubles on the season. He also averaged 1.4 steals per game.
Davis is, at times, turnover-prone. Last season he averaged just under three turnovers per game. Most of his turnovers come from him being aggressive on the offensive end, but most coaches are willing to live with those kinds of turnovers.
At FAU, Davis was a ball-dominant guard averaging 13 shots per game. There shouldn’t be a need to change his game at Arkansas. His new coach John Calipari has seen his share of volume scorers and has found success coaching dominant guards in the SEC. Davis should thrive under Calipari’s high-paced offense.
