SEC Basketball: Ranking the top 20 incoming transfers for the 2024-25 season
By Justin Wiles
13. Mark Mitchell (Missouri)
2023-24 Season at Duke: 11.6 PPG | 6.0 RPG | 1.1 APG | 54.0 FG% | 27.5 3PT%
Mark Mitchell spent the past two seasons at Duke, starting 67 games for the Blue Devils. Last season was solid for Mitchell as he improved in almost every statistical category. He averaged just under 12 points per game while shooting right at 54 percent from the floor. He was a relatively consistent scorer this past year, scoring in double-figures in 21 of the 33 games he played. He scored his season-high of 23 points twice in wins over Notre Dame and Wake Forest. He was a good finisher around the rim, making an impressive 59 percent of his shots inside the three-point arc.
Mitchell was also a solid rebounder last year, grabbing more than ten rebounds in three different games. While Mark Mitchell is a solid offensive player, he shines more on the defensive end of the court. His defensive contributions don’t always light up the box score, but Mitchell is athletic enough to guard multiple positions and strong enough to be a center in smaller lineups. He’s a good off-ball defender and an overall solid addition to any roster.
The biggest concern about Mitchell is his jump shot. He is a good scorer close to the basket but becomes much less reliable away from the basket. Mitchell didn’t take a ton of threes this past season, only 40, but the issue is he only hit 27.5 percent from deep. Luckily he won’t need to be the team's leading scorer at Missouri. Dennis Gates has made an effort to bring in plenty of elite scorers to improve the offense. Mitchell’s defensive upside far outweighs his offensive, leading him to be a net-positive roster addition for the Tigers.
