Mark Madsen

Haase was given eight years as head coach at Stanford. Had he only been given seven, there’s a high probability that Madsen would’ve become head coach of the Cardinal last season. Whether or not he’d leave a new job after a single season, especially after a recent contract extension, we’re still considering him for several reasons.

Madsen starred at Stanford back in the late 90’s during a successful run for the program before a near decade in the NBA. He actually spent a year as a Stanford assistant and was also on the Los Angeles Lakers’ staff for six years. Madsen built winning success in four seasons as head coach at Utah Valley, including a pair of WAC regular season titles, before accepting the head coaching job at California last offseason. The Golden Bears took a step forward in his first season, earning said contract extension.

Getting Madsen to leave Cal for rival Stanford after just a single season would be quite the coup, even if it would be to return to his alma mater. Madsen has been impressive in his first five seasons as a collegiate head coach and might be the best candidate for the job with prior experience with the Cardinal. It’s all about bad timing for the folks in Palo Alto, unless they’re willing to go all out to steal him from the Golden Bears.
