No. 11 Seed

Year

George Mason

2006

In 2006, George Mason spent two weeks in the top 25 near the end of the season. However, the Patriots would drop a game to Hofstra in their conference tournament semifinals putting their inclusion into the NCAA Tournament in jeopardy.

They would get an 11 seed, though. Of course, with that seeding no one foresaw the run they were about to go on.

In round one, they took down No. 6 seed and perennial power Michigan State 75-65. Then, they stunned No. 3 seed North Carolina (the No. 12 team in the national polls) 65-60.

In the Sweet 16, GMU defeated another mid-major power, Wichita State 63-55. Then, in the Elite 8, they pulled the most stunning win of the tournament by taking down No. 1 seed UCONN (the No. 2 team in the top 25) 86-64 in overtime.

However, in the Final Four, they would fall to No. 3 seed Florida (the No. 10 team in the polls) 73-58. The Gators would then go on to beat UCLA in the National Championship game for the first of their two National Titles in program history.
