UConn Basketball: 3 keys for Huskies in Sweet 16 matchup against San Diego State
By John Makuch
1. Slow down Jaedon LeDee
When it comes to the Aztecs out of the Mountain West, Jaedon LeDee has been the driving force behind their great season following their National Championship run. LeDee is the 18th-ranked scorer in the nation with 21.5 points per game and has been a dominant player at 6'9, 240 pounds with great inside ability. This will be the matchup that Clingan has to deal with, and it will not be an easy task for this game.
LeDee is coming off a 32-point, eight-rebound performance against UAB, and 26 points and nine rebounds against Yale. They will have to lean on him to have the best game of his career, and he has the ability to step up and do so here in this matchup. Lamont Butler will also be a factor, but it will all start with stopping LeDee from getting to the basket and forcing his way to the line.
He has the chance to become a big-time March performer in his fifth year of college basketball. LeDee went from a single-digit per-game player to being one of the best players in the entire nation. But for UConn, they have to force double teams onto him and create steals. Having Clingan there is already a force enough, but getting help from Stephon Castle to trap him will be a big part of their defensive plan against him.
That is much easier said than done though, but if they get the job done against him then this will turn into a victory to advance this team to the Elite Eight. The Huskies have some things to clean up, but with Dan Hurley leading the way, all of that should be ironed out for this huge game.
