Josh Schertz

With his work in recent years, Schertz is absolutely a rising name in the coaching ranks, and someone who could be looking for a better job this offseason. Hiring another rising name isn’t a bad idea for the Commodores, and Schertz has already shown to contribute to a winning culture at multiple schools.

A former graduate of Florida Atlantic, Schertz assisted Bart Lundy at multiple schools, including a nice run at High Point, before starting his head coaching career at Lincoln Memorial. Schertz took Lincoln Memorial to a slew of D2 success, including three D2 Final Fours, before being hired by Indiana State back in 2021. He’s built something special these last three seasons, improving from 11 wins in his first year to an MVC regular season title and a 28-6 mark this season.

That success at Lincoln Memorial came in the state of Tennessee and a move to Vanderbilt won’t be a big culture shock to Schertz. The transition from MVC to SEC would be significant, but he’s shown the ability to recruit, build, and coach winning basketball to this point in his career. He’s another name that’ll be on nearly everyone’s list, so it really boils down to interest on both sides. That long tenure with the Railsplitters does make Vanderbilt feel like a more likely outcome.
