Villanova Basketball: Penn transfer Tyler Perkins commits to the Wildcats
Coach Neptune receives a new piece for the upcoming 2024-2025 season as he grabs rising sophomore Tyler Perkins from the Pennsylvania Quakers out of the portal.
Perkins made his decision to join the Wildcats on April 14th, per Joe Tipton.
The 6-foot-4 and 205-pound guard from Lorton, Virginia, averaged 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists this past season as a freshman for Coach Steve Donahue. His shooting percentages from the field nearly touched 40 percent, and from the three-point mark, he stood at 35 percent. Not too shabby for a first-year college athlete.
Perkins was second on the team in scoring, right behind Clark Slajchert, who reached 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists on the season. The Quakers consisted of four different guys in the double-figure range. Despite Perkins not averaging the most per game, he did score the most points with 398 over his 864 minutes played. A valuable piece that Villanova fans should be excited to have.
There have been two different occasions that Perkins has scored 25 points, which was his season-high. One happened against the Belmont Bruins on November 25th and January 27th against the Columbia Lions. These were two of the five times he scored at least 20 points throughout the 2023–2024 campaign.
Villanova is coming off an 18-16 season where they ended up finishing seventh in the Big East with a 10-10 record. This positioned them behind Providence and in front of Butler within the standings.
In the video above brought to us by College Basketball Scouting, Perkins' scoring ability lives around the cup. There are some clips showing his footwork in the post area, which is pretty impressive for a guard. In addition, his lefty stroke from downtown serves him well, as he's able to let one fly and drain it with confidence. His ability to play with screens or without them is a huge asset that will provide many different kinds of looks for Villanova within their offense.
Coach Neptune, you've got yourself a promising player.
