Nearly every team in the nation will be affected by the Transfer Portal, whether by addition or subtraction. We’re barely scratching the surface on it, especially with the Final Four still upcoming this weekend, but another move was made as Tre’Von Spillers heads to Wake Forest.

Spillers is a 6’7 forward from Charleston, South Carolina who’s had a very indirect route to the ACC. He spent his freshman season at South Carolina-Salkehatchie before transforming into a massive frontcourt weapon as a sophomore at Moberly Area Community College.

After a season where he was among JUCO’s best rebounders and shot blockers, Spillers transferred to Appalachian State and was a key piece for the Mountaineers this season. Not only did Spillers put up great numbers on both sides of the ball, he helped the Mountaineers to a 27-win season, including a regular season title in the Sun Belt.

Spillers has been a great performer across the whole season for the Mountaineers, averaging 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. He became a double-double machine in recent weeks, helping Appalachian State to wins over Auburn and multiple times over James Madison. He put up multiple 23-point efforts in conference play and recorded double-doubles in five of his last seven games.

Though Appalachian State fell short of the Big Dance, Spillers played well with 12 points and 10 rebounds in their NIT loss, which ironically came to Wake Forest. Now he’ll make the short journey to Winston-Salem to join Steve Forbes and the Demon Deacons, hoping to become a prominent frontcourt weapon on this ACC squad.

Last season saw Spillers named First Team All-Sun Belt while ranking among the national leaders in field goal percentage. He’s been efficient on the offensive end and an above average shot blocker. The Demon Deacons are hoping that his game can transition into the bigger stage.

There are a few Wake Forest players sitting in the Transfer Portal and some uncertainty on next year’s lineup, but Spillers is the first big addition of the offseason. We’re uncertain exactly what things will look like, but nabbing a big man who’s shown this potential is a great move for Forbes and company. It’ll all depend on how his game translates to playing against ACC foes and more prominent opposition.
